The Fishtail Palm is a stunning evergreen palm with highly unique palm leaves that are a cheery, bright green and splay off the stem in striking clustered fish-tail shapes (or mermaid-tail for those more whimsically inclined). Cascading white palm flowers appear throughout the warmer months, with red-orange fruit that is attractive to birdlife appearing throughout much of the year.

This gal is fast growing, and grows up to about 8 metres tall outdoors. She is ideal for tropical gardens, borders, understory planting for larger trees, tub planting, feature planting, indoor gardening, foliage, and interior decorating. Low maintenance, they prefer warmer locations or bring indoors. Caryota is shallow rooted, so we recommend protection from strong winds, which is easily accomplished through underplanting.

The Fishtail is also prized as a wonderful indoor palm that is truly unique, only growing to around 2.5 metres inside. Indoors they are slow growing, which is exactly what you want for an indoor plant! All you chronic over-waterers out there? Rejoice! For indoor care, they prefer abundant watering, keeping the soil moist if at all possible. They prefer to grow in pots that look a little small for them, as they like constricted roots. Colour us impressed.

Humidity hardy. Lightly wind tolerant. Can handle limited frost. Prefers somewhat moist, well drained soils. Full sun to full shade. For best effect, they prefer not be in full sun all day.
